Elderberry Syrup: A Recipe for Winter Health

November 15, 2017

Because I can't come to your house and hang out in your kitchen, and because I believe in you, I decided to sell the herbs for this syrup and let you make your own medicine. Don't worry, I'll walk you through it. The herbs used in this formula, as well as the reasons I chose them, are as follows.

Elderberry Syrup $23

Elder berries

Hibiscus flowers

Rose hips

Echinacea

Ginger

Cinnamon

Hibiscus Flower: Starring the antioxidants A and C, as well as as immune-boosting zinc.

Rose Hips: Nobody puts Rose in a corner. The hips contain 50% more vitamin C (over 500mg per cup) than oranges, and means that rose hips are anti-inflammatory, immune boosting, and antioxidant. Rose hips also have a large amount of lycopene, and make this syrup taste so much better than ketchup would.

Echinacea: Michael Tierra says that Echinacea is the wonder herb for all acute inflammatory conditions. I have the pleasure of being his student, and let me tell you, he knows his stuff. Studies done by Germany's Commission E have also demonstrated the anti-viral properties of Echinacea, which suit our purposes here very well.

Ginger: A tasty stimulant that promotes circulation, warms the lungs, and thins mucous. Ginger is also known as a harmonizing herb, meaning it enhances the effectiveness of the herbs it hangs out with.

Cinnamon: In addition to being delicious, cinnamon warms the organs and is helpful for calming a cough.

Cloves: With powerful antioxidant qualities, cloves have long been used in both Western and Ayurvedic herbal traditions for fighting colds and flu.

*Raw Honey: Honey that has not been pasteurized contains beneficial phytonutrients propolis and pollen. It is enzyme-rich and has been shown to increase levels of polyphenols in the blood. Polyphenols = immune system boost. Handily, raw honey is also antibacterial. Because of these properties, we never want to heat it beyond 95 degrees F.

Your Elderberry Syrup order contains a packet of the herbs along with step-by-step instructions for making your very first batch. As a bonus, by purchasing from me you have access to a brilliant mind and help by a kind, English-speaking human.

When you are done, you will have:

A quart of hand-crafted, tasty medicine.

The satisfaction of a job well done.

The ability to protect and treat your family members from cold and flu.

*Because local raw honey is most beneficial, I'll have you provide that ingredient, as well as the tap or distilled water you will use in preparing the syrup.
